چکیده

With approximately 225 million new cases and 800,000 deaths annually, malaria exacts a tremendous toll—mostly on African children under the age of five. Late-stage trials of an advanced malaria vaccine candidate—which, if approved, would become the world’s first malaria vaccine—are under way, and it may be ready for use by 2015. Percolation on Oriented Square Grid with a Hint of the Fire-fighting Problem

First, we will briefly introduce oriented percolation with our focus on a special orientation on the square grid. Then we will discuss critical probabilities of bond or site percolation on this particular orientation. Finally, we will introduce the Fire-fighting Problem and prove a theorem regarding an upper bound for these critical probabilities in the case that fractional fire-fighters were a...

Perceived aggressiveness predicts fighting performance in mixed-martial-arts fighters.

Accurate assessment of competitive ability is a critical component of contest behavior in animals, and it could be just as important in human competition, particularly in human ancestral populations. Here, we tested the role that facial perception plays in this assessment by investigating the association between both perceived aggressiveness and perceived fighting ability in fighters' faces and...

Structural adaptations to diverse fighting styles in sexually selected weapons.

The shapes of sexually selected weapons differ widely among species, but the drivers of this diversity remain poorly understood. Existing explanations suggest weapon shapes reflect structural adaptations to different fighting styles, yet explicit tests of this hypothesis are lacking. We constructed finite element models of the horns of different rhinoceros beetle species to test whether functio...

Nutrition in critical care.

Many hospitalized patients with cancer are malnourished. Some become critically ill and experience delayed wound healing, loss of muscle strength, and reduced infection fighting ability as a consequence of the loss of nutritional reserves. Complications of critical illness may cause interruption in normal gastrointestinal function and result in shock, sepsis, hypochlorhydria, systemic inflammat...

D ow noad Fighting is dangerous, which is why animals choose to flee once the costs outweigh the benefits, but themechanisms underlying this decision-making process are unknown. By manipulating aggressive signaling and applying nitrergic drugs, we show that the evolutionarily conserved neuromodulator nitric oxide (NO), which has a suppressing effect on aggression in mammals, can play a decisive...
